The definition of the word "Etymotic"is "true to the ear" and so you don't struggle with it, "et-im-oh-tik" is how you say it. The company was founded about 25 years ago, as a design and research company, with a goal to design products to measure, improve, and protect hearing.

The Etymotic ER-4P earphones were a result of that goal for use with portable CD and MP3 players. They certainly are not cheap, but you get what you pay for.

Perhaps they are pricey, but if you've spent a pretty penny for an iPod, the ER-4P is insurance that your MP3 player will live up to it's full sound potential.

These bad boys are a by-product of technology originally created for hearing aids. One reason that you have to pay for this technology is that ER-4P earphones are hand-built by a skilled research engineer working with a stereo microscope.

At that point, extensive testing is performed at Etymotic's factory in Elk Grove Village, Illinois. (Etymotic manufactures the ER-4S and the ER-4B, which are not made for portable use.)

I have discovered, after testing several dozen earphones, that most of the time you have to cram the eartips deep into your ear canals. The ER-4P is, unfortunately, no exception.

No big deal, but it is something to consider when considering a pair. It is also important to note that the tips must be cleaned often because of the accumulation of ear wax.

Please don't come to the conclusion that these earphones are unsafe, the research and development behind them has made them real safe.

Just keep this in mind, because of their remarkable noise-isolation feature, they are definitely on an equal footing with battery-powered noise-canceling models. It is a definite relief that you don't have to turn up the volume to be heard over background noise.

The Etymotic ER-4P is a veritable God send for the frequent flyers or train commuters. I actually am equally comfortable with these earphones as I am with my PXC 350 conventional noise canceling cans! Although, if you have a small ear canal, your experience may be different.

Amazing as it may seem, sometimes it is hard to tell the difference between the right and left bud. With the ER-4P, this is not an issue. The earpieces are color coded--red for right and blue for left.

The ER-4P comes with a 5-foot cord that ends with a 1/8-inch stereo miniplug, together with a 1/4-inch adapter plug. A shirt clip is included to pin the dangling headphone wire to your shirt.

The kit comes complete with a travel pouch and a spacious home storage box, in addition to three pairs of interchangeable rubber eartips and five pairs of foam ones.

The quality of the audio that these dudes put out is fantastic! It is richly layered and crystal clear! But, you knew that, didn't you?
